Anak ng isang Food Vendor, Naka-graduate bilang isang Magna Cum Laude sa Bacolod City

We all heard the saying, “HARD work is the key to success.” And there is again a proof of this saying, meet Chrisma Jane Manalo, a Bachelor of Secondary Education in Mathematics who graduated as a magna cum laude at Bacolod City College (BCC) Class of 2018. On Wednesday, April 4, during the 18th Commencement Exercises of BCC at the SMX Convention Center, showed her thankfulness to God and to her mother Christine Manalo, who is a food vendor. BCC is one of the second biggest batches since its foundation and has a total of 907 graduates. Manalo said as she opens her speech,

“I’m very blessed that I achieved this award and I’m very thankful to God and to my parents. It is for them,” 

She also said that

“I achieved this through my hard work. Before looking at the bigger picture, you must look first at the small things to achieve your dream.”


Chrisma is a 20-year-old woman who is a scholar of the Commission of Higher Education (Ched) and is a resident of Barangay Taculing. She said her mother was selling native foods outside on the BCC campus. She also has two siblings. According to her, her father died when she was elementary.
She added,

“I’m thankful to my parents and family for helping me achieve this award and I am thankful to BCC because they molded me into what I become.” 

She said,

“College education was possible for me because there is BCC.” 

Manalo said she will focus on the board examination, after the graduation. BCC has already generated a total of 10,056 graduates. 28 graduated as cum laude, all coming from the Teacher Education Department; and 45 academic excellence awardees from the Teacher Department, Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, and Bachelor of Science in Office Administration, out of 907 students. However, those 907 students that graduated in this year was all came from Bachelor of Elementary Education—68; Bachelor of Secondary Education—55; Bachelor of Science (BS) in Industrial Technology—58; BS in Business Administration major in Marketing Management—44; BS in Entrepreneurship—156; BS in Office Administration—222; BS in Information Systems—156; and Associate in Computer Technology—148.

As Mayor Evelio Leonardia told that you can make it anywhere in the world if you can make it in BCC. The city government-run BCC in 1997 during his first term as mayor, Mayor Leonardia said in his commencement message,

“You have a college education that is of top quality. I would like to inculcate in your hearts and minds that BCC is an institution that you can be proud of.”

Mayor Leonardia added,

“Whatever it is, the day belongs to the graduates of the BCC and we are sure you can face the world and I’m sure you can go a long, long way.” 

Mayor Leonardia has established the BCC in 1997 which the tuition fee there is P30 per unit. He also said,

“I promised that as long as I am the mayor, I will not increase the tuition fee of BCC. What we are proud of is that while we have cheap tuition we have a quality education.” 

As stated by Mayor Leonardia, BCC students will enjoy free tuition, as it will already be shouldered by the national government, if the city complies with the requirements.

According to him,

“We had produced by now 10,000 graduates. Now that you are graduating please consider this, BCC in 2008 produced a topnotcher out of the 53,195 examinees in the Philippines, number 14 was from BCC. In 2016, of 77,466 examinees all over the Philippines, the Number 9 was from BCC.” 

He added,

“According to the records, we are listed among the Top 23 best elementary education in the Philippines, and we are number 28 out of 1,445 colleges and universities offering Bachelor of Elementary Education.” 

Also gracing the graduation ceremony were First Lady Elsa Leonardia, Representative Greg Gasayata, Councilor Renecito Novero, Councilor Em Ang, and BCC Alumni Association president Israel Salanga. Gasataya also awarded the honor graduates, who are Ched scholars, with Kampeon sa Edukasyon Academic Excellence Award.
